In the Art Room: Painted Trees (A Work in Progress)

So I thought I'd share with you a project that we just started this week and isn't quite finished yet. Usually I post projects once they're complete...but I've noticed when I peruse art blogs, I like to see Works in Progress (WIP. WIP it good). It kinda helps me wrap my brain around the steps of the lesson and the time it took to complete. Because, when I see these awesome projects posted on my fave art blogs (check out these nominations on The Art of Education for a killer list of art teacher-y blogs), I sometimes feel a little overwhelmed and get that "my kids could never do that" feeling in my gut. But that could be the indigestion from all those bowls of butter noodles and cereal (go here if you need a reference to that not-so-funny inside joke).

So, without further ado-do, I present to you my second grade students Painted Trees Project which is currently a Work in Progress.
Disclaimer: I ALMOST didn't post this photo because it looks like such a hot mess. The messy table, the grimy water cup, that Dirty Ole Sponge Bob and the sad state of the watercolor tray. Not to mention the rando cups of paint stacked on the table. But, even though the photo is embarrassing for me, I thought you should see it for a coupla reasons:
  1. You don't need the World's Cleanest Art Room to create the World's Greatest Art. Like you, when I get to school in the morning, I don't stop running around and preparing supplies until the kids walk in the door. And by then, I'm usually exhausted by all the paper cutting/paint preparing/clay wedging/and coffee making (because without that none of the aforementioned would be possible). My goal is to have all the supplies accessible and ready. Bright and shiny clean is not tops priority for creating...in my room anyway. That being said, I am beyond grossed out by those cups and sponges and will be cleaning 'em in all my spare time.
  2. I love to see how art teachers set up their tables. So I thought I'd share how I set up for watercolor painting...even if it looks like a disaster. I use that styro tray to hold the paint, non spill water cup (best invention ever), and a Dirty Ole Sponge Bob (that's what we call him) to dry our brushes on. Because the students were using warm or cold colors to paint their skies, I like to have the watercolors organized in ROY G. BIV fashion so the kids can easily look down and see that the warm colors are the first three colors in the rainbow and the cool are the last three. Now, I did remove green and replace it with magenta for two reasons. I didn't want them to add green all over their skies (call me a control freak, I've been called worse) and I wanted them to know that magenta could be used with a warm or cool palette. See, there is a method to my messiness.
  3. When you have 4, 30 minute back-to-back classes with each working on a different project, you end up with a variety of supplies on your tables. Hence the cups of paint. That would be for a 1st grade project I'll share with you in the future. 
Now, let's chat about supplies for a moment. I used to hate teaching watercolor to the children because I couldn't find a decent set of paints. Or brushes. And it was frustrating for me and the kids when their end result wasn't as amazing as they'd hoped. Now I've got the good stuff. Put this on your next supply order:

Crayola's Watercolor Mixing Set Yes, they're more expensive than their regular watercolor paint. But so worth it. I mean, look at those colors! 

Royal and Langnickel Paint Brushes So soft you'll catch the girls pretending they are make up brushes and putting imaginary blush on their cheeks. Or non-imaginary paint all over their face. Not that that has ever happened in my room. Ahem.
Okay, let's chat about this lesson. I started with flashcards with words that pertained to the lesson such as: watercolor, paint, brush stroke, warm colors, cool colors, sumi-e, Japan, Asia, etc. As the children entered my room, they read these words to me even if we hadn't discussed their meaning yet. This is an adjusted version of my vocabulary post that you can read here. Once inside, we gathered around a table to watch a demonstration. I told the kids that making art was all about making choices and that today, as artists, they had many to make:

Which direction will I format my paper, vertically or horizontally? 
I am creating a sky scape. What time of day do I want to paint?
Will my sky have a sun, moon or neither? 
What size sun or moon will I have?
If I am making a moon, what phase will it be in?
Would I like to paint with all warm or all cool colors?
What kind of brush strokes could I use?
I know, a lot to think about, right? AND in 20-ish minutes once they returned to their seats. I did a quick demo as a reminder on how to properly paint with watercolor. Here's what I tell 'em:

It's called watercolor paint because you gotta add water. Place a couple of drops of water into each little pan.

Your paintbrush is like a ballerina...she always paints on her tiptoes. She never ever scoots around on her bottom. Because that would be ridiculous and unattractive (although mildly entertaining). 

Listen to your paintbrush. If it's making a scratching sound as it sweeps across your paper, it's thirsty. Add more paint and water. It's also telling you it's thirsty when you see scratchy brush strokes. Give that ballerina a drink!
I then showed them a wee demo on wet into wet/wet into dry. Then I hurried 'em back to their seats so they could actually begin.
At the end of the first 30 minute class, most had finished their 10" X 12" paintings. And then some looked like this. Like, amazing, right? These students completed their watercolor paintings the following art class.
It was interesting to me to see how one class managed to finish in 20 minutes...meanwhile all looking strangely similar. It's funny, I didn't even do that ring-around-the-sun thing in my demo.
And other classes really slowed down and thusly this was the result at the end of the class.
These paintings were finished up on the second art class as well.
During the second 30 minute art class, those that were not finished with their skies were allowed to do so. Those that were finished, moved on to adding a tree to their skies. But before we did, I chatted some about sumi-e brush painting techniques. I told the kids that they were to create a tree painting on practice paper first before attacking their painted paper. I gave them permission to paint as many of these paintings as they wanted until they created one that they were happy with. I really love these little paintings. 
During my little demo, I showed the kids how to apply pressure to their brush to create a thick line...and then slowly lifting the brush off the paper while painting the branches. This made the lines of the branches become thinner and more branch like. For the twigs, students could use itty-bitty brushes. Another tip is to have the students slowly twist the brush as they lift it off their paper which also thins the line.
I'm excited by the results of this 2, 30 minute painting lesson. But we're not finished yet...stay tuned for what happens next with these masterpieces!

In the Art Room: Marbled Paper Stenciling

Alright, what you see here is the result of "I wonder what would happen if we tried this" about 3 minutes before the kids walked into the room. I'd planned on us trying our hand at the Japanese art of suminagashi, which translates "floating ink", but was able to throw in a little stenciling too. That is if all the stars lined up (no pun intended) and the kids were able to capture the paint on their paper at just the right moment. More on that in a minute.
First, lemme tell you what I told the kids. I explained to them that we were not only going to make paint float (which received a lotta "what?!"s) but also capture that floating paint with our papers (which got a lotta "how in the world!?"s). I had them "go shopping at the store" for one sheet of paper and two card stock stars. I inherited about 500 of these stars from my mother-in-law and haven't stopped finding projects for them (thanks, Diana!). One of the reasons I think this worked great as a stencil was because of the thickness of the stars. I don't think regular paper stencils would work as well. But that's just a guess.
The great thing about these stars is that they have a little dye cut hole in them so we can easily string them together later. Still dreaming up project ideas for these guys. For now they are simply pretties.

These two sheets were created on our first day of marbling when my marbling mixture/paint mixture was off. You can see this by the clumping and streaking of the blue paint on the right. I still love the result.

So you wanna attempt the Japanese art form of suminagashi? I hafta tell ya, it's a bit tricky getting the ratio mixtures just right (it involves measuring which is math-esque and therefore gross like boys and boogers). But if you are willing to give it a go, here's what worked (most of the time) for me: 

Supplies: 
  • Blender (I have a thrifted one. You won't want to use a personal one. Unless you're making slimy smoothies for someone you don't like.)
  • Carrageenan (That'd be powderized seaweed. Your bigger art supply chains and online retailers will have this). 
  • Trays. Use deeper ones then you see here if you are working with many classes in a row.
  • Watered-Down Acrylic Paint (I use watered down craft store paint).
  • Droppers
  • A Hair Pic or homemade version (I crafted mine outta toothpicks and foam core. It looks like some kinda torture tool...which gives me lots of ideas when the time out spot just isn't doin' the trick [kidding! ... kinda]).
  • Paper (der)
Prep:
  • Do yourself a favor and follow the directions on the package. You'll be blending up to one gallon of water per two tablespoons (if memory serves me correctly) in warm water. 
  • Pour mixture into shallow trays and allow to rest for up to 12 hours. I did this in my art room right before leaving for the day.

What the carrageenan does is thicken the water so that it can hold up the paint. You're trying to get that paint to float on the surface of the water. For this, the paint needs to be pretty watery and light. So I mixed paint and water in cups and squirted it into the tray to test it's floatiness. If it sank, I added a little more water.
So I discovered I only had two picks. For 20 kids. So I had to improvise and make these bad boys outta foam core and toothpicks. I'm mighty proud of my MacGyver'ness. P.S. I promise that's not blood from my earlier torture device comment.
Turns out kids don't know how to use droppers. Did you know this? So we had a little chat and practiced pinching the droppers in the air. We also had to discuss that you are to gently squeeze the dropper to release the paint. NOT squeeze it hard and douse the art teacher. Ahem. 

Now, I have classes of 20 students, 4 trays and 30 minutes. Which is like a recipe for disaster. To kinda make it work, I had all the children gather around those two tables you saw earlier, planted one child in front of each of the four trays and walked them through the directions as their buddies looked on. After giving them a moment to add the colors to their tray, we moved on to using the pic or "feathering."
I really had to stress that with the pic, the goal is to create designs in the paint for the paper to capture. Not simply stir the paint all around. Some of 'em got it and the others that didn't were quickly straightened out by their buddies that were watching them.
Then came the capturing part. I helped each individual child with this step. I had them place their stars gently in the tray with their names up. I quickly dropped their paper on top, took it out and they were to quickly remove the stars. This didn't always happen quickly because they were so stunned looking at the paper I had lifted out. Again, buddies on hand would say, "your stars are sinking!" and they'd be removed from the slimy solution. Which feels like snot. Not gonna lie.

Okay, honestly? The stenciling was like a happy accident...when it worked. Sometimes the kids didn't get their stars placed quite right and the simply ended up with a marbled paper. And, honestly, they didn't care. They were just so in love with the process and the magical idea of capturing paint.
However, I'm a little sad the results weren't as vibrant as I remember our marbling projects in the past being. Have you marbled this way before? It always seems rather hit or miss to me. Do you have sure fire method? I'd love to hear it.
Of course, shaving cream is super fun and easy...but I really wanted to give the experience of suminagashi because we are currently studying Japan. One kit I had included methylcellulose which didn't work at all. Almost positive that was operator error. Have ya'll used that with any success? Can you come over to my place and show me how it's done? I have coffee and chocolate.
For now, I will continue using this method. I'm excited to share this with my older students because I think they'll love it.

In the Art Room: Trying Something New

The Art Room Foyer...that's right, my room is so big it has it's own entryway. I'm totes spoiled, ya'll. You can learn more about the Smartest Artist Game (seen on the right) here and read about our day-to-day attempts at routines and procedures here.
You ever find yourself watching those amazingly terrible infomercials where you're all, "who would buy that?!" only to get sucked in a little further to discover that the 'mercial is speaking directly to you and that product they're pitching could quite possibly solve all of your life's problems? For example, how about the Better Marriage Blanket which, with it's activated-carbon fabric, a material "used by the military to protect against chemical weapons", can put an end to the silent and deadly problems which reek, er, wreak havoc in otherwise happy marriages? Or what about the Rejuvenique Electrical Facial Mask, which closely resembles Jason's Friday the 13th hockey get-up, but packs a nine-volt battery electrical shock punch to those pesky wrinkles. I just know in my heart of hearts that with 5 easy payments of $39.99, my life would be perfection, right?

Such is kinda the story of my life in the art room. I see a problem, I dream up some incredibly perfect way to fix it and...it either turns out shockingly bad (like my facial mask) or super stinky (shoulda went for the blanket). However, in this here post, I wanted to spare you the stink and share with you the (so-far) successes. So here's a list of some new things I'm trying and enjoying in the art room this year. Enjoy and puh-lease let me know what new things you are giving a go this school year. Shake Weight Paint Brush, perhaps...?

I Can Statements. In my neck of the woods, my students are to be told several times just what it is they are learning and what it is they'll be accomplishing. I'm also supposed to tie that in to the state standards and put it in kid friendly terms. So just to the left of the bulletin board seen in the top photo is this miniature dry erase display of their current I Can's along with the permanent standards. When the children enter my room, they walk along a line I have taped to the floor. When the first student has reached the end of the tape and all have entered the art room, I have the students repeat their daily I Can's after me. This helps us all to focus and puts an end to the question, "What are we doing today?!"
Time Timer. I have Art Teachers Hate Glitter to thank for this. She made mention of using this in her art room and I was excited to try it out. With 30 minutes for art making, I am always watching the clock and I am also always losing track of time. More often than I'd like to admit, one class is cleaning up while I have another class walking in (at which point we play the "Let's Watch the Other Class Clean Up and See How Well They Do" Game...which is a totally boring game and Milton Bradley ain't going to be making a version anytime soon).
My students love this thing. In fact, when they walk in and take a seat on the floor, if one of them notices I've not set the time, they'll ask to do it for me. As time moves on, the red pie gets smaller and finally ends with a loud beep of the alarm. This has become our signal to clean up. What I love about this is that the children have become more aware of time management. You can find the Time Timer here.
See, Think, Wonder. After repeating our I Can statements at the door, I'll often pick a student to "be the teacher." This student will sit in my chair and discuss a work of art I have on my easel. The work of art will often be created by our Artist of the Month. The "teacher" is to ask the children "What do you See?" (note the camera icon) and they are to respond like they would with me, by raising their hand. After speaking with a couple of children the teacher can then move on to "What do you Think?"  (lightbulb) and "What do you Wonder?" (question mark). This game is great because it buys me a little time to get supplies out on tables and it allows me to pre assess students knowledge, thoughts and questions about a work of art.
Also on my board I have my I Can statements posted again for their viewing pleasure. By the way, the display on the right was created with the children's messy mats and a poster from Target.
Good Music. My husband and I love going to theme parks because they are magical. And I want my art room to be a magical place in the school. With all that often goes on in a half an hour, it's hard to stop and make a magical moment happen for the children. So good music helps. This amazing CD has been on constant rotation in the art room. It's calming, quiet, recognizable and, well, magical. Next on my music wishlist is the Star Wars soundtrack.
Choose Your Own Adventure. Did you all read Choose Your Own Adventure books when you were kids? I loved them. If you are not familiar, you read a short chapter and at the conclusion, you can decide, as in the case of this book, if you A. Want to invade a monastery, B. Go on a Viking raid or C. Fight in a Viking battle. From there, the book takes you on a wonderful adventure of your choosing. I've been reading this to my fourth grade students (I've deemed it inappropriate for those younger due to Viking violence) and it has sparked so much creativity with their Viking drawings. As a class, we vote on the adventures we go on. Even in my short 30 minutes, I can manage to read a couple of adventures. There is an enormous library of these books on amazon. In fact, just today I purchased Ninja and Samurai adventure tales. The kids are thrilled.
Snap Snap WOOOSH. I suck at clean up procedures. There. I said it. Mostly cuz we're running late. However, with the Time Timer keeping track, we are getting better. Our new procedure is that when you hear the alarm, you clean. Once your table is clean with everything put in it's correct spot (having a mini trash can on the table as seen on the right in the photo above really helps) and all of the students are standing behind their pushed in chair, they count down at their table and collectively snap their fingers and give me the "Snap! Snap! WHOOSH!" with a wave motion of their arms. They are to only do this once (otherwise they will do it repeatedly and drive me nutz) at which point I'll check their table for neatness. If they are good, I send them to line up. If not, they are asked to continue cleaning and give me the signal again when they are ready. So far...it's working out pretty well.








Art Class Homework. They asked for it, I swear! In fact, they can get pretty grumpy when I don't have anything for them. So once a week, I'm making art homework available for the taking. My plan is to tie it in with our artist of the month and see just what they come up with. Once the art work is returned to me, we look at it and recognize those young artists at the beginning of class. I'm plotting a way to display these hard workers efforts and I'll share it with you soon.
Personally, I think an Ice Cream Dress is a FANTASTIC idea...and has given me lots of food for thought...so to speak.

In the Art Room: Welcome to Japan!

 So, can you guess where we'll be traveling this year in the art room? If you just guessed "Chexico!" like one of my students today, then, I hate to tell ya this, but you are incorrecto. As they say in Chexico.

However, if you guessed, "We are going to Japanese!" like another student of mine, then, yay! You're getting warmer! We'll be studying the art, culture and people of Asia this year. I decided to go with a Japanese theme for my room decor.
 That being said, I really had no clue just how I was gonna transform these windows into the Land of the Rising Sun. So I uprooted a stash of Hokusai prints (my inspiration for this post) and slowly started knocking it out.

 The kids are always fascinated by the window paintings. My favorite question of all time: "Does the principal know you painted the windows?" My other favorite question comes every year from my custodian buddy who will walk in, stop dead in his tracks and say, "Did you paint that?!" Seriously, every year. When I tell him, "yes!" I always get an "all by yourself?!"
 It took me a couple of hours to wash Paris off my windows and take down all of the art work. Here's what my blank canvas, so to speak, looks like. It's a lovely view but it can be very distracting to the kids when we have wacky weather, friends on the playground or sun shining in our eyes and burning out our retinas.
I began working on this during summer for just a few hours a day. On the morning I came back to this, I absolutely hated it. The colors seemed too bright and garish to me. But I've got a rule about art-making that comes courtesy of Tim Gunn: Make it work.
 At the end of that day, I was getting a little closer to being finished and a little happier with the result. I figured whatever I didn't like I could stick my giant tree in front of. Cuz that's Tim Gunn's other no-as-popular credo: Big a** trees hide big a** mistakes.
 This here's about the time I threw down my brushes, wiped my brow and heard that oh-so-familiar, "Did you paint that?!" And all that was left was adding the tree.
 Now this tree came in at least a half dozen parts from the ever-so-lovely Anthropologie store in downtown Franklin, Tennessee. Wasn't that so super awesome of them to donate it to the art room? I thought so. I had some of my favorite buddies help me put the thing together...and we almost did it. However, my skillz with drillz are seriously lacking. The thing ended up with enough screws sticking out of it that it closely resembled a cactus. When I asked the principal if all the kids had their tetanus shots because, if not, we might have a prob with all those rusty bits sticking out, she kinda freaked a little. I'm not gonna lie. I was woe-is-meing to a wonderful parent at our school who then proceeded to volunteer her awesome husband to come and fix Big Bad Tetanus Tree. And all was happy in Chexico. Er, Japanese. Japan! Whatever.
And while I totally love my Japanese set up, I gotta tell you, I'm gonna miss Paris a bit. In fact, I had one or two students today tell me that they'll miss seeing the hot air balloons and the Eiffel Tower.

 The year before we studied Europe, we covered Egypt. At this time, I was only painting the right bank of windows. Before I went all crazy town and painted the entire ding-dong thing.
Regardless, I'm super stoked for the new school year. This is what I wore today as our introduction to the art room and a tiny glimpse into our year in Asia. Although it appears we might have to have a wee chat about cultural acceptance as I heard this from one of my students today:

"Mrs. Stephens," with a look from head to toe, a sigh and an eye roll, "you look ridiculous. As usual."

Seriously? I get no respect!
