 Vintage Dress Love Monday: So when I found this vintage dress for next to nothing at Buffalo Exchange, I gotta admit, I squealed a wee bit. Despite the fact that I look a lil like a Pizza Hut table cloth, it has this darling pearl-bead detail on the bodice that would make any vintage-loving gal weak in the knees. It's truly a summer-y dress but with the weird warm weather we've been having, it seemed perfectly suitable for a 70 degree December day (which is unheard of in these parts, y'all!). dress: vintage; belt: Pin Up Girl Clothing; fishnets and tights: Target; shoes: Clarks

Ahhhhh. Do you hear that? The sound of silence. Not a child stirring in your art room. Not even a mouse...well, unless you're me. And then there might be a mouse or three. I hope this blog post finds you enjoying some well-deserved off time (or at least very near it!). I have managed to spend nearly 75% of the first day of my winter holiday in comfy pajamas mostly due to a cold and slightly due to slacker-ism. I've decided to embrace the slack and (hopefully) cast off the cold. I do hope your break finds you doing the former and not the latter (or is it the other way around? I never could keep those two straight). Regardless! Enjoy yourself, your friends and your family this holiday session. AND these incredibly tacky ensembles. Until next time!

Oh, Tacky Tuesday!: We have a lil Tacky Christmas Sweater Day tradish at my school and for the last coupla years, my kindergarten-teacherin' friend Heather (left) and second grade teacherin' pal Bethany (right) make skirts! This year we each bought a tree skirt at Big Lots for $7 and spent a couple hours one afternoon turning them into lady skirts! What you can't see is that Heather's skirt features Santa!  Weird Santa Wednesday: I made this table cloth into a lady skirt last year after scoring it on ebay. What sold me on it was the delightfully creepy Santa Claus. You can find that DIY here. sweater: vintage, thrifted; tights: not sure, Marshall's or TJMaxx, maybe?

Pajama Thursday: Okay, y'all. My school has hosted many a PJ Day and I've never participated. Mostly because my previous pjs have been horrendous sweat pants and hole-y t-shirts from high school. It's not exactly the look I wanna be flaunting around, ya know? I mean, I do have a reputation to uphold. However, a quick run to Target (along with half the faculty and staff of my school, ahem) I found these lovely Nick and Nora snow globe themed numbers AND panda slippers all for 40% off. How could I resist? Of course to complete the look, I had to go all out, y'all. 

 Like, ALL out. The kids nearly died. They rarely see me in pants, let alone pjs and glasses. I slapped my eye cover on the top of my head along with a scarf. I gotta admit, I was very comfortable all day. 

 And, not surprisingly, totes unproductive. I just wanted to crawl under a table and nap! The temps have now plummeted so wearing this gem at bus duty was a must. Did I mention that I had to go to the bank, the office supply store AND the craft store afterwards? When I waltzed into the bank, you coulda heard a pin drop. I said, "Look, before you say a word, it was Pajama Day at my school. I know this is usually Walmart attire but I promise you, it was for educational reasons." 

Managed to Get a Cold for Christmas Break Friday: Our Friday's before this break are only 2 hour days. They are super fun, full of class parties and a big ole school sing-along. What the Art Teacher Wore #151

 Monday Was Technically STILL November, But...I just couldn't wait any longer! I've been itching to bust out all things red and green since the sugar buzz wore off from Halloween! I was all, "Get outta here, November, I'm done with you! I only have 25 days to wear every piece of festivus clothing I own (which exceeds 25 days. Surprised? Can we be real for a sec? I've kinda sorta been suckin' at this whole photo-a-day thing for a while. And I feel really bad about it for a coupla reasons. One because it shows I'm outta my usual routine (not that one was ever really established for the likes of a crazy person like me) which means that most mornings I'm running behind and out the door before snapping a pic. And I really hate starting my morning in a rush and a fluster because it has lately been effecting my entire day. Another reason I feel bad is, well, cuz I put together some mad outfits, y'all! That need to be shared with the WORLD. Or at least the five folks that read this blog.

In all seriousness, I've been actually feelin' pretty low this week. I feel like I'm swimming in a mess of a mess (like, for realz. My art room is gonna be the end of me, y'all) and it's all I can right now do to slap on a silly outfit and a smile. I'm not sure just what is going on but I'm determined to snap out of it soon. So, cheers to a new week and another chance to do my very best...at dressing crazily that is!

I must confess...another reason I've been lousy at snapping photos daily is because I do a good amount of sharing on Instagram. You can find me giving new meaning to the word "oversharing" here.

I Actually Hate Candy Canes Wednesday: Nope, never been a fan.  I pretty much hate peppermint anything and want to know what tastebudless pleasure-hater created it so I can go pee on their tires. I know that sounds harsh but don't you recall how razor sharp those sucked-on canes could be? Tongue-killers, y'all! Not to mention trying to pull the plastic wrap around the curve of the cane. Well, hello there. It's been a long time since I did one o' these lil What the Art Teacher Wore posts! Even so, can you believe that there have been nearly 150 of these posts?! Just outta curiosity, I did a lil search and found my What the Art Teacher Wore #1. It's funny to see just how much brighter and goofier my style has become...and how somethings just never change (like, geez, my hairstyle. Lil known fact: I have Hair-Style-Change-Phobia). 

In other news, I got myself a new crinoline (I always buy the cheapo ones off Amazon for, like, $14. They last about 3-6 months before they deflate and I get another. Anyone know where I can get a great crinoline that won't go flat?). New crinoline means BIG PUFFY SKIRTS! I busted out all my biggest and widest dresses and skirts this week just for the occasion. And, as per usual, I managed to knock several works of art off tables as I swooshed by. Sorry not sorry, kids!

Banana Legs Tuesday: My sweet kindergarten friends are always perplexed by my colorful tights. When asked why my legs were yellow I told them I had eaten to many bananas.  Tired Feet Friday: I was doing okay until I decided to stay late and tackle one of a storage closet. I have all of these great children's books organized in my closet and I thought, "why are these not out for the kids to read?!" So then I started creating a wee library in my Jungle Lounge. Do y'all have a library in your art room? How do you keep the books organized? I am thinking of putting mine in bins and color coding them so they stay organized. DIY: The Bride Gets Busted! Painting

Lately, I've had the itch to paint pieces to decorate the house. I'm kinda tired of looking at the same ole stuff that's been up for entirely too long. So with the change of the seasons, I thought it'd be fun to create a coupla Halloween-y works o' art. And, ya know, if I'm gonna paint a painting, I gotta redecorate the whole room to work around it, right?!

Right. 

I got the idea to paint mugshots of The Bride way back in August when I came across this amazing post of vintage lady mugshots. Tell me these aren't the most bad a$$ ladies you've ever seen. I've dreamt up stories for each and every one of them! I really wanted to paint my own set of mugshots after seeing these and decided that ones of The Bride would be perfect for Halloween. So, I dug out a canvas from The Hoarder Room (yes, this magical place of never ending chaos and thrifted goodness exists) that I'd painted black and texture-y years ago.

From there, I added two scratchily painted square shapes and started sketching in The Bride.

 I blocked these in all fast and furious like before heading off to bed. I have this habit of getting hung up on small details. So if I can block in an entire painting in one stage of work, it really helps loosen me up, let go and enjoy the process a whole lot more.

Can we just talk about how gorgeous Elsa Lanchester is for a moment? Holy Macaroni, y'all. Those eyes! That pout! That lil dent-in-thingie on her chin. Gorg.

I tried my very best to do her justice. I've never painted monochromatic portraits before so that was fun and interesting. I liked it because I didn't have to mess with skin tones and such. However, the computer image was tricky since it didn't have a huge variety of values to work from. So whenever I would start to get frustrated with her face, I'd work on her hair. Which was super fun!

Ah, lookie! It's a What the Art Teacher Wore on the Weekend: pj's. It's a rare occasion when I'm not in pj's on the weekend. Don't judge. 

There's some lil thingies that still bug me but, eh, she's done. And I'm pretty pleased.

And then there came the profile. UGH, y'all. That profile drove me bananaz!

Even at this stage, it still felt cartoon-y somehow. I stayed on the struggle bus for a while with this one. But I kinda blame the image I was working from.

It truly didn't offer me much value on the surface of her face because of the way the photo was lit. Everytime I painted her face, she just looked so flat. But, look at the photo, it looks flat!

I ultimately took a mirror and used myself as a model to at least capture some cheekbone-age. I just realized I never finished the neck! Oh my gosh, what's that black teardrop shape soul patch thingie hanging from her chin?! Too late now. Once it's on the wall, I won't take it down to fix nothing. I've got another painting on the easel now!

I wanted her mugshot clip board thing to have those slide-in letters that often look crooked and wonky. I thought that might add a bit of silliness to the piece.

And finished! If you like this lil piece, I added it to my Society6 shop! Then you too can rearrange your entire dining room to feature one painting, ha!

Lil known secret: the only reason I actually did clean and redecorate my dining room is because I hosted a lil Crafter-ween party on Friday! More details on that and what we made in an upcoming post. It's sad...but the only reason I'll clean is for company. I think that's why the hubs never argues when I say I'm hosting a Craft Night.

Oh, look, a sneak-peak of our craft night! We worked with Sculpey, one of my fave things ever. But, alas, I'm getting ahead of myself. More to come!

DIY: A Prom Zombie Dress

Lil known fact: Halloween is the most celebrated holiday at Casa de Cassie. Not cuz we decorate all crazy-like (although the hubs' secret dream is to operate his own haunted house. Dream job goals, y'all. We all got 'em!). No, it's because we absolutely love going to haunted housing events with our fave being Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights.

Opening weekend was this past weekend and we were extra stoked because this year is the 25th year they've been running Halloween Horror Nights outta Orlando. Which could only mean one thing: tons more scariness. This year did not disappoint with nine haunted houses, most based on Universal flicks: The Purge, Insidious, Freddy vs. Jason, American Werewolf in London and others based on the Walking Dead and other spooky themes. Between walking from one haunted house to the next, there are themed areas called scare zones. So, in short, you are constantly being chased by scary chainsaw wielding maniacs. For example...

 Mitch (the hubs) was all, "Hey! You need photos for your blog. Just stand riiiiiiiight there and smile." 

Me: Are you done yet? Pretty sure that's enough photos. For realz. WHY ARE YOU STILL TAKING PHOTOS, WHAT'S BEHIND ME?

This lovely new friend of mine was just one of the awesome scare actors in the Shady Acres scare zone where the concept was inmates from the local asylum had escaped. Turns out she just wanted to show off her chain saw handling skillz...on my face.

Just a short clip to give you more of an idea. No videos or photos are allowed in the haunted houses...after all, you're there to "enjoy" them, not film 'em. But take my word for it, they were super scary.

 Now y'all might know that I've sewn and created my share of Halloween ensembles like this Day of the Dead number and this one, this Monster-Mash mash-up, these Haunted Mansion pants, this Universal Studios Horror Flick dress and this Bewitched dress. And every year, I say the same stinkin' thing: I'M NOT GONNA MAKE ANOTHER HALLOWEEN OUTFIT. But then, I spotted that there Alexander Henry Zombies! fabric at JoAnn's and I was like, fine! Just take all my moneys! Since I needed to bust this dress out quick, I settled on that vintage McCall's 6221. If it looks familiar to y'all, that's cuz I've made a Monet dress, a Valentine's Day number and a Barbecue frock with it. 

After that super scary night, we went to Disney's Not-So-Scary event. Now, I might be a lil biased because I'm kinda bananaz for Disney but this event was so great! Families get all dressed up and trick or treat at the various treat-giving locations. Also, ALL of the characters are out for you to get your photo with. What that meant for us was that most folks were so busy with the candy and the photo ops that they weren't in line for the rides. We had a 5 minute wait on Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain and The Haunted Mansion which, if you've ever been to any Disney, you know that's unheard of.

The maids of the Haunted Mansion (my absolute favorite-est ride with It's a Small World coming in at a close second) were decked out and so fun to chat with. I love how they immediately snapped into character when they realized Mitch was snapping photos!

 Boom! Nailed it! 

They also had tons of scare-actors out and about! There was this fabulous ghost story teller outside of the Haunted Mansion that was a total riot. And a traveling troupe of Civil War ghosts who sang western tunes acapella. But the parade and the fireworks were my fave.

But the best thing was getting to eat at Be Our Guest. Y'all. It's like Mission Impossible to get a reservation here. But right before we left our hotel, Mitch decided to all them on a whim and ask if they had anything available. The hostess informed us that they'd just had one spot open up! I enjoyed dining in there so much that I didn't even think to snap a single photo but you can see more of the place here.
