In the Art Room: Getting to Know You Paper Sculptures

Hey, friends! Today I'm sharing what my students, all of 'em, kindergarten through fourth grade, are working on to kick off the school year. I am calling them our Getting to Know You Sculptures!
If you follow me on Instagram, than you know I've been sharing a lot of info about this. I've gotten a TON of requests for the sheet...so I thought I'd share it with you.

I know this sheet has been unavailable for some time...the link has been fixed! You can get two sheets now!

Here's one!

Here's the other!

I wanted to create a lesson that the kids would love, would be easy for all to be successful at and help me out...I have to be absent for the next couple of days. So I knew I'd want something that would be easy and fun for my sub. I created a video for my sub (I always do...it just makes for much smoother sailing) and I thought I'd share it with you...just so you could see how I explain this lesson to my students.
Note: I WILL NOT be using the sheet with my kindergarteners. Here is the lesson that I do with them...very similar but without the sheet of paper as their guide:
So far the kids have been LOVING this project and I am enjoying getting to know them! They've also been chatting to each other about why they picked what and it's so fun to hear them talk about it. I cannot wait to share with you how this lesson will progress...so stay tuned.

You might have noticed that I DO NOT use glue bottles. You can find out why here
Not gonna lie, storage is gonna be an issue until we get these hung up! I'm having some classes do theirs on a white background 12" square paper and others on black. For open house night, I plan to hang them in a checkerboard patter. The strips of paper are cut frmo copy paper.
In an attempt to stay organized, I'm keeping them clipped according to table colors.

PLEASE NOTE...I love sharing lessons with you all and I do so for free. All I ask in return is that, if you use ANY of my lessons, please give credit where it's due. If you share on social media, please let folks know where you go the lesson from...this way they can benefit from the free resources as well. THANK YOU!

Good day everybody my name is Mrs Caroline Gilli am here to share with you my life experience on how a great man called Dr Alexzander saved me and my marriage.I have been Married & Barren for for 5 years i had no child. i have never been pregnant i was a subject of laughter from my Friends & neighbors, i almost lost my marriage because of this issue.i was so confused that i did not know what to do until i came across this great Dr online and i contacted him at once i was scared weather it was going to work because i never believed things like this before, so i decided to give it a try and i did all what Dr Alexzander asked of me and today to my greatest surprise i took in the first time and i gave birth to a bouncing baby boy and now my marriage that was about crashing before is now restored. my husband now love and want me better, Am so happy for everything that have been happening in my life since i met this Dr Alexzander.
I want to tell all the women/men out there who have a similar situation like mine, that the world is not over YET they should dry up their tears and contact this great man and their problem will be gone or are you also having other problems you can also contact Dr Alexzander, here is how you can contact him alexzanderhightemple@gmail.com or contact him via his whatsapp phone number +2348075823891.

  2. I didn’t want you to just have bot comments here. . . and I have a question. I love the bright colors. What brand of paper did you use? Do the colors come in sets? Thanks!

    1. I use Peacock, but these days Tru-Ray is giving them a run for their money! Tru-Ray has improved the pigment so it's not grayed-out anymore. I love the neon packs too, and I've stopped saving them for "special projects." Of course, if you have the big Bucks to spend, United Art Education has Hygloss pre-cut *wonderful* strips!! I'm on a cart now, so I'm willing to pay to have something already prepared for me. ;-)

  8. Are there printable instructions somewhere? Are you just using regular construction paper? I’m at a school with limited supplies, so I need to purchase them can you recommend best brands and where to buy?

Hi there! Love your glue method!! Quick question - Do you quickly wash out glue from brush tips before they dry, or do you just let dry hard ... and reuse? Thanks!!

    1. I use the same glue method in my class. I have a TON of the cheapo brushes that I use for glue. At the end of the day I have the kiddos put their brushes in the paint brush bath tub. It's basically a plastic tub with hot water in it. I let the brushes soak overnight then rinse and dry them on a towel in the morning. Works like a charm!

  15. Hi Cassie! I'm excited to this art project with my class, but I have a question! For part 2, could you do another video showing how to make the pieces? That would be really helpful for me and for my kiddos. Thank you!!

  16. This is a really great and creative idea to try something new as an art activity for kids. I also want to share this awesome collection I discovered from https://panelwallart.com/collections/push-pin-world-map/ that can be a reference for futeure artworks. Thank you for sharing this artistic masterpiece. Keep up the good contents!

  26. Do the 5th graders like this lesson?

  27. I have done this lesson since I have been teaching (20 years) and I first learned about it from a book called "tell me about your picture" by Janet Carson (Copyright 1984) The lesson was called "A Miniature Playground". SO... not necessarily an original idea HOWEVER I love how you teach it and how animated you are with it. It can be used in so many different ways...LOVE IT and LOVE YOU!

  28. And using the "paper sculpture" as a getting to know you activity is indeed an original spin on this classic activity! Thank you!!!

  29. Cassie, you are such a delight! Thank-you for sharing your gifts and talents! I'm wondering what size paper strips (length x width) you use for these on your 12" square? Also, where you do you find such vibrant paper?
