21 Art Lessons with the Theme of Love!

Who's ready to kick off this new year with a whole lotta love, color and bright, fun lessons? BUT who's also not done any real thinkin' about said lessons?! If you said ME to both of those questions than I gotta tell ya, YOU AND ME BOTH. Luckily, I've done a whole lotta love lessons over the years and put all 21 of 'em right here in this blog post. Kindergarten tried their hand at printing with this project and had such a blast! 

These relief hearts by kindergarten were a hit and definitely a lesson I hope to repeat soon! 

Of course, you can't celebrate all things love and Valentines-y without sharing the work of Chris Uphues with your students! We've done a couple lessons inspired by him. This one is a collage and printing project. 

This lesson has always been a hit on my blog with other art teachers and my students. In fact, I created this lesson as a sub plan so it's been a hit with my subs too! You can find all the details and video here.

My students created this HUGE collaborative mural inspired buy Britto. Lesson video here!

First grade created these huge Britto-inspired hearts with bingo daubers, bleeding tissue paper and paint sticks. Lesson details here. 

Ready to tackle printmaking with your students? Here's a lesson I've done a couple of years now with my second graders: Robert Indiana-inspired LOVE prints! 

I created these hearts with wings with foil, Celluclay and plaster strips! They are super simple to make. More here. 

Inspired by those hearts, I created a lesson for my second graders to make these!

James Rizzi is always a fun artist to share with your students. We loved creating these love birds!

Here's another lesson we do just about every year in first grade: these woven and stitched hearts! All the lesson details can be found here. I created a variation of this lesson recently where students weave together strips of paper in their skin tones. You can find it here. 

These candy hearts were created by my fourth graders and we used plaster strips to create them. It was so fun to see these all come together and display them in a large candy heart box! Lesson details here. 

Early finishers of the candy hearts lesson moved onto this project when they were finished! 

Wow, did the third graders have a blast with this one! We made plaster chocolates that looked good enough to eat! All the lesson details here.

In the Art Room: Top 15 Fave Valentine's Day Lessons!

After winter break, I always find myself in the mood to start Valentines-y/Warm-Fuzzy/Lovey-Dovey projects with the kids. When doing a little searching on my blog last night, I discovered that I've done 15 Valentine's-themed lessons over the years. I had no idea I'd done so many! I thought I'd share them with you today. Robert Indiana Love Prints! Believe it or not, my sweet FIRST GRADERS created these a couple years ago! It was a great lesson for printmaking and definitely one I will be doing again. If you don't have printing ink, you might want to check out this blog post where I'll show you how to print with paper and markers!

James Rizzi Love Birds!  Who doesn't love James Rizzi?! These birds are based on some of his work and is a great tie-in if you've already taught Rizzi and his fun cityscape works.

 Recycled Hearts!  Last year, I had a stock pile of messy-mats from our months of painting. We used them to make these two fun works of art (see below also) and they were such a hit! What a great way to review the warm colors, pattern and line.

Chris Uphues Hearts! If y'all don't know who Chris Uphues is, then you need to! He's one of my fave dudes to follow on Instagram. His artwork is so fun, so happy and so kid-friendly. They had a blast creating these happy hearts inspired by him.

J Goldcrown Hearts! If you need a quick one day project, I would recommend this one for sure! You can introduce your students to another street artist, J Goldcrown, and have them work in chalk! This is a great project for just about all levels. 

Sculpture Hearts! Last year, I introduced my second graders to Celluclay with this project. I have 30 minute art classes with these kiddos so we had to hustle! We spent one day covering our foil hear in clay, two days painting and the last day stringing beads. These were one of my favorite projects for Valentine's day!

 My Heart Has Wings! If you want to do a feel-good project with your faculty and staff, might I recommend this one? We did it on a PD day and it was so much fun. Of course, this would be a great project for kids as well.

Candy Heart Sculptures! My fourth graders created these candy hearts last year and they had a blast. We used plaster strips which created a super hard surface for the candy. We even made giant candy boxes to display them in!

 Woven Hearts! Every year, first grade does a paper weaving and every year we do something a little new. Last year, they nailed the weaving part so well, I thought I'd introduce them to simple sewing. They did great and I loved hanging them up like a quilt.

Candy Heart Drawings! When my fourth grade early finishers were done with their candy heart sculptures, I had them move on to a drawing of their candy hearts with oil pastel.

Britto Mural! A few years ago, I had to be out for a couple of weeks for jury duty. While I was gone, I had my students work on the parts of this Britto-inspired mural. It was great because then there was a fun masterpiece to hang in the hall when I returned. You can check out the instructional videos in the link.

Valentine Animals! My kindergarten kiddos created these fun animals last year. I created an instructional video for each one which you can find by clicking on the link. 

Collaborative Heart Mural! Collaborative pieces are a lot of fun this time of year. If you follow the link, you'll see which grades created what for this huge collaborative pieces that still hangs in our front office.

Peter Anton Box of Chocolates! This might have been a kid-favorite as it involved using EVERYONE'S favorite art supply: puffy paint! Check out how we made the faux candies and boxes by following the link.

DIY: Top Ten Spooky Ensembles!

Happy October 1st, guys and gals! I'm SO EXCITED that my favorite month which is also home to my favorite holiday is FINALLY here! I've been sharing my favorite DIY's for the season as well as my favorite art projects for kids...and today I'm sharing my TOP TEN SPOOKY ENSEMBLES! Can you tell I'm excited based on my excessive use of the caps lock and the exclamation points? Sorry, I just can't control myself. 

But before I go any further, I have some super spooky and fun news to share with you: I've been chosen by Treetopia to one of their 2017 Halloween Queens! What does that mean? Well, that they sent me a CANDY CORN CHRISTMAS TREE which I've just spent the last 48 hours crafting and decorating. And you'll be able to catch a sneak peek right here tomorrow on October 9th. I'm so excited to also share that I'll be hosting a HUGE giveaway then. Ya'll won't wanna miss this!

Zombie Dress! I found this amazing Walking Dead-esque fabric at Joann's last season and knew I had to make a dress! I wore it to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. Mitch snapped the photo...knowing full well that there was a psychotic chain saw gal with great hair creepin' up behind me. More details on the fabric and the dress pattern used right here. 

Needle Felted Haunted Mansion Eyeball Pants! Okay, I know that's a lengthy description but that's exactly what these bad boys are. I found the stretchy pants at Target and knew right away that they'd make the perfect Haunted Mansion pants...as the print reminded me of the creepy-eyeball wall paper at the place. The Haunted Mansion at Disney is one of my most favorite things ever. I was so excited to create these pants. And, PANTS! I never wear 'em. In fact, I have three pairs and this is one of them. El Dia de los Muertos Dress! I've actually made a couple...I love all things Day of the Dead. These planters were super fun to paint as well. I'm excited to wear this dress this year. But I'm on a heels boycott so, sadly, I won't be wearing the dress with those super cute heels! More dress and planter details here. 

Monster Mash Dress! I think one of the reasons I love Halloween so much is because of the music. It's like Christmas music in that we listen to the same songs every year...and they bring back so many fun memories. Monster Mash makes me think of bobbing for apples, trick or treatin' and wearing our costumes to school. This fabric inspired me so much, I needle felted a matching sweater! More here. 

Classic Horror Movies Dress! The classic Universal Studios horror movies are my favorite thing ever. Well, maybe not the movies so much as just looking at the posters, the movie stills and photos Boris Karloff getting into so many amazingly spooky characters. This fabric is some of my favorite and I always get stopped when wearing this dress. You can read about it right here. 

The Scream! Granted, this dress wasn't intended to be a Halloween dress, but I'm gonna stretch and say that it qualifies as Munch's the Scream is spooky as all get out. Not to mention, despite the fact that this dress is sleeveless, it's COMPLETELY made of felted wool on the front thereby making it the hottest sleeveless dress in history. It's been confirmed. Another el Dia de los Muertos Dress! I had a lot of fun adding the colorful pompoms to the bottom of this dress. I'm telling you, seeing the colorful art of this holiday makes me so happy. I wish I had more of it in my home! For now, I'll have to settle on this here dress. Read all about it here. 

Black Cat! I knew as soon as I spotted this curtain fabric at IKEA that it was coming home with me and becoming a dress. I now am ruined for fabric because of this dress...because now all I wanna sew with is big and bold print (preferably from IKEA because it's so incredibly inexpensive!).  Naughty Kitty Club Jacket! Okay, so one could argue that this is not Halloween specific but I disagree. If you know your vintage Halloween cat decorations (what?! You don't!? Shame on you!) then you'll recognize this cat. He's the one on most vintage Halloween decor. I loved him so much, I decided to needle felt him onto the back of this cheapo jacket. More here. 

Spooky Owl Sweater! Have you noticed a trend? In the fall, I LOVE to get back into needle felting! Every season, I return to it and don't stop stabbing stuff (ahem) until spring. I'm excited to get back into needle felting soon...just don't know what I'll be up to yet! More about this simple project here.
